Lily creates hand built ceramic busts using clay she dug up from the moors surrounding her hometown in West Yorkshire. A key theme running through her work is that of ‘Belonging’ and what makes her subjects feel like they belong; is it a place, a person or an object? She experiments placing handcrafted items and drawings with the ceramic busts to add to the concept.
Educating herself on the scientific break down of the clay, allowed her to understand exactly what she was working with and to form a relationship with the material. She is interested in highlighting the natural formation and layering already seen the clay, rather than concealing it with decoration.
