Louise Richardson designs and creates bags and travel accessories. Surface designs & fabrics are location based; the inspiration for this degree collection being the historic city of Edinburgh.
With roots in product design, Louise designs and creates practical products suitable for everyday use. The project deals with both the form and function, as well as the textile surface design.
The idea for Printed textiles for a travel collection, based on a physical location, felt natural, and with a love for city-breaks and exploring somewhere unfamiliar, the Historical city of Edinburgh was a natural starting point. This location is not only naturally beautiful & inspiring, with its dark underground history and winding closes, but is also closely linked to Louise’s own family history.
The use of materials straight from Edinburgh’s royal mile weaving mills brings the products raw context, and makes each bag completely unique.
There is a strong emphasis on sketchbook work for this collection, which Louise enjoys approaching in a number of different ways. This includes the use of inks, lino prints, watercolours, blind drawings, detailed sketches and free-motion stitch.
From this sketchbook work, Louise has developed a vast range of fabric prints and versatile surface designs. The designs are brought to life using a combination of digital printing, screen-printing and lino printing. Many fabrics are adorned further with intricate beadwork, embroidery and quilting.
